Askja
Herdubreid, Askja, Viti
Guided Superjeep tour
From the comfort of our Superjeep, experience the barren interior of Iceland, the lunar-like landscape where NASA trained Apollo astronauts.
We drive across vast stretches of sand and lavafields on a rugged mountain track towards Mt. Herdubreid, Iceland's national mountain. A short stop is made at Herdubreidarlindir, an oasis in the desert.
The Drekagil gully is explored before driving into the Askja caldera where we park next to craters from the 1961 eruption. From there a walk to Askja lake and Viti, an explosion crater formed in 1875. The more adventurous people have the opportunity to take a bath in the crater pond (don't forget a towel).
On the return journey we cross the Jokulsa river on a bridge on our way to "Mountain Coffee" in Modrudalur, the most remote cafe in Iceland.
The tour includes a fair amount of walking so warm clothes and good shoes are recommended. A packed lunch should be brought along as refreshments can not be purchased until late afternoon in Modrudalur. Reservations necessary.
Snow in Askja in early summer can cause longer journey time.
