Krafla, Gjastykki and Jokulsa Canyon

Guided exploration with escorted walks.

This tour explores the Krafla area and Gjastykki, a very Mars-like terrain together with geological features similar to those already imaged on Mars. Up to two hours are spent exploring still-steaming craters, fissures, lava domes and deposits of incredible rainbow-coloured slag spewed up in the 1984 Krafla eruptions. Then a drive towards Mt. Eilifur, where we stop for a picnic lunch near the isolated Eilifsvotn lake.

The tour continues along the barren area of Grjothals to Hafragilsfoss (27m) and onto the edge of Jokulsa Canyon at one of its deepest points, 120m. The last stop is made at Selfoss (10m) and Dettifoss (45m high, 100m wide). After a walk to the waterfalls for a good look at close range, the tour returns to Myvatn via road no. 1. On the way back the beautifully symmetrical Mt. Herdubreid, the national mountain of Iceland, is visible on a clear day in the distant highlands.

The tour includes a fair amount of walking so warm clothes and good shoes are recommended. A packed lunch should be brought along as refreshments can not be purchased en route.
